General facts

(HB 1936) The Federation was founded in 1919 by women graduates of the Universities of the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Representatives of other countries were invited to attend a Conference held in London in 1920, at which fifteen nations were represented. The activities of the Federation are of a practical character, its object being to promote friendship and understanding as far as possible by personal contacts. Research fellowships enabling women who have distinguished themselves in any branch of science or letters to pursue their work in foreign countries have taken an important place in the Federation's programme. This programme also organises exchanges of teachers, readers, librarians, curators, medical doctors, etc. The organisation of group travel under the direction of the associations of the countries visited has proved to be an excellent means of promoting the Federation's aims. Clubs, of which Crosby Hall in London is perhaps the outstanding example, for the use of members residing in centres of culture have been created in certain towns. In a large number of countries arrangements have been made with hotels and boarding-houses to take members on reduced terras. Although the Federation is not political in character, it has made a detailed study of certain aspects of the legal and economic status of women and has taken action as regards the nationality of married women, unemployment among women and the Convention on the Status of Women.
