General facts

I. S. E. (HB 1936) The Eglantyne Jebb office was set up for the purpose of extending the activities of the Save the Children International Union to continents other than Europe. It began work in 1928 with an enquiry into infant mortality in Africa from the pathological, economic and social standpoints; education as a preparation for life; conditions of child labour and child marriage. In 1931 an International Conference on African Children was convened at Geneva. Its proceedings were based for the most part on the documentary material collected during the enquiry. The International Conference recommended the formation of a permanent unofficial centre for documentary research, the exchange of information and experience, and liaison between private societies supporting Government activities and colonial services (administrative, medical, educational) on the one hand, and social and scientific institutions, both national and international, on the other. The Office was set up as a separate section of the Save the Children International Union. It adopted the name of Eglaiityne Jebb, the Founder of the Save the Children International Union. (HB 1938)
